Work on waste water treatment project continues
Lowry City Council members addressed a short agenda at their regular March meeting Tuesday, March 2. It was noted that most of the paperwork has been completed for the sewer project and five loads of pipe have already been unloaded for the project. According to Clerk Lucy Olson, the cost of pipe will be increasing shortly and the contractor wanted to keep costs down by getting the pipe now, but needed a place to store it. Permission was granted to store the pipe at the park.

March 18, at 10 a.m. a preconstruction meeting will be held at the Community Room between Quam Construction and Rural Development. According to the clerk, the council members do not have to be in attendance as long as she can be at the meeting.

The only thing council members had to do Monday night was to sign the contracts for Quam's Incorporated. Once these contracts are signed, they will be sent to Rural Development for their signature, and then provided to the city, Quam's and Rural Development.

Currently the city is awaiting answer from several residents outside the city limits for permission to test their water for arsenic. Seven letters were sent, and several have already responded. Once everyone has answered in the affirmative a date and time will be set to have the water tested.

After reviewing the costs to blend the water from the back-up well with the main well, it was felt it would likely be cheaper to drill a new well at a site where there were lower levels of arsenic and pipe the water into town.

Clerk Olson warned the council that in getting the state budget balanced the Governor may take away the Local Government Aid for this year and next year. She said that would be about $12,000 the city of Lowry would be losing and would need to find ways to make up.

In regard to summer hire, it was decided to contact the individual who did the work last summer to see if they would be interested. If not, then they would need to advertise for the part time position.
