Shaffer hospitalized after boating accident

Nine-year-old Tatum Shaffer continues to recover at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, N.D., following a July 5 boating accident on Rose Lake near Vergas. Shaffer, who is the son of Chris Shaffer (fiance Cindy Casanova) of Starbuck and Tracie Mallberg of Fargo, N.D., was tubing behind a boat on Rose Lake when he was struck by a propeller of another boat.

The family's Caring Bridge Web site stated that Shaffer's mother and boyfriend pulled an unconscious Shaffer out of the water after he was hit on the right side of his head by another boat's propeller. He was taken by ambulance to Perham Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to MeritCare Hospital (North) in Fargo, N.D., where he remains.

According to reports, a second child on the tube, a nine-year-old girl, sustained minor injuries from the accident

Deb Hanson, Shaffer's grandma, said the soon-to-be fourth grader injured his brain in the accident and suffered a laceration to the right side of his head, a skull fracture, dislocated right shoulder and many cuts and bruises.

The family has set up a Caring Bridge Web site to keep friends and family informed of Tatum's recovery. The Web site can be accessed at www.caringbridge.org/visit/tatumdshaffer.

Tatum Shaffer is the grandson of Grant and Deb Hanson of Glenwood.
